Can You Play Xbox 360 Games on Xbox One X?

The Xbox Series X and Series S are both fully backward compatible with nearly every game on the original Xbox, and that means they can also play games from the Xbox 360. That’s a big draw for gamers who opt for Microsoft’s console. Not only do they get to enjoy the most recent Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S games, but they may also consume content from a huge library stretching back to the start of the 2000s.

But what games does it include, and how does it work? Here’s everything you need to know about the Xbox backward compatibility system.

How does Xbox backward compatibility work?

For the purposes of playing classic games, the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S can run emulator software on your system that makes it seem like a last generation machine.

When a supported game is launched on the system, the emulator is opened and, in all aspects, it appears to be running on an Xbox 360 or 2001 Xbox. The first screen that appears is the opening screen; after that, the game loads.

All features and functions that are available on a typical Xbox 360 or Xbox are accessible on the Xbox One/S Series X/SC, including the hub (which may be accessed by simultaneously pressing the menu and view buttons on an Xbox wireless controller). Furthermore, all new functions of more recent Xbox models operate, such as taking screen captures and recording and sharing gameplay video.

Patches and updates for the newer consoles, such as the Xbox One X, provide additional incentives. The newest consoles are also capable of playing many (if not all) of the backward compatible Xbox 360 and Xbox games with Auto HDR enabled. This adds virtual high dynamic range contrast and colors to make the games appear better. Many games have FPS Boost turned on as well. This raises the game’s frame rate, which gives for a more pleasant gaming experience.

Does it cost me anything?

Backward compatibility is free for Xbox. If you own a compatible game on an older system, you won’t have to pay anything to play it on your Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S.

Obviously, buying new Xbox 360 or Xbox games to work on the system comes at a price. Many of the backward compatible titles are also available as part of an Ultimate membership with Xbox Game Pass.

For £10.99 per month, you get to play over 300 downloadable games for your console, including several old Xbox 360 and Xbox games as well as many more PC titles from EA Play, Cloud Gaming, and even Game Pass for PC.

You also have access to online gaming privileges through Xbox Live Gold, EA Play, Cloud Gaming, and even Game Pass for PC

Does it work with Xbox games I bought through Xbox store?

CD-based as well as digital games can be played on your Xbox One or Xbox X using backward compatibility. In fact, if you put a supported disc in your Xbox One or Series X, the system will download the game from the Microsoft Store first – however you’ll need the disc to play every time. This isn’t possible with an Xbox One S All-digital Edition or an Xbox Series S because they don’t have disc drives.

If you have a digital copy of a supported game, it will show in your Games list for download. Check the My Games & Apps section of your account to see if any games are still waiting to be downloaded.

Can I buy Xbox 360 and Xbox games on my Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S?

The Xbox game store offers games for the Xbox 360 and Xbox. Free Xbox 360 and/or original Xbox games may be downloaded each month, alongside Xbox One titles, as part of the Games for Gold program for subscribers to Microsoft’s online service. That usually implies you receive two free Xbox One games each month, in addition to two free backward compatible games.

The Xbox 360 console and games are available on the official Microsoft online store for a variety of price points, with prices ranging from £5/ $5 to around £25/ $20.

Can I carry on with my previous Xbox 360 game saves on Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S?

If you had previously enabled cloud storage for your Xbox 360 games, you may download the save files to the Xbox One version and carry on. The cloud files are linked to your gamertag for good, so the Xbox One should take care of it automatically.

If you stored your in-game progress locally on the hard drive, you’ll have to restart your Xbox 360 and save them to the cloud rather than restoring it from a backup. If you don’t have access to your Xbox 360, unfortunately you won’t be able to retrieve the files.

You can’t continue using old save games since the first Xbox didn’t store games to the cloud in the same manner.

What games are available with Xbox backward compatibility?

There are hundreds of Xbox 360 games that can be played back using the backward compatibility program, as well as a good selection of original Xbox titles.

You can’t use any games from the original Guitar Hero or Rock Band series, since they require proprietary accessories that aren’t compatible. Even if you own an Xbox One Kinect, previous Xbox 360 Kinect games will not be playable.

Here’s a comprehensive list of the original Xbox games that are platform-neutral and can be played on newer consoles with backward compatibility:

*# These games are optimized for Xbox One X and the Series X/S, which means they run at a higher frame rate and/or resolution when played on those systems. Many games will also take advantage of the Series X/S Auto HDR feature.

Conclusion

The Xbox One X and the Series X/S are great systems for playing Xbox 360 games. They offer increased frame rates and resolutions, as well as support for Auto HDR. If you’re looking to play Xbox 360 games on a next-gen system, either of these would be a great option.
