Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system created by Roblox Corporation that allows players to create their own games and play others’ games. User-created games in the programming language Lua are hosted on the site, which was founded by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 and debuted in 2006. For the most part, Roblox was a tiny platform and company until recently. In the second half of the 2010s, Roblox began to flourish, driven by COVID-19 pandemic. Roblox is a free, online game that has in-game purchases available through a virtual currency known as Robux. As of August 2020, there were more than 164 million monthly active users on Roblox, including over half of all US children under the age of 16. Roblox has generally received positive reviews from critics, but it has faced criticism for its moderation, microtransactions, and exploitative practices. Roblox’s greatest advantage over other platforms is that all of the games are made by its users. The enjoyment on Roblox doesn’t just come from playing games; it also comes from making them. Although these games are not created by Roblox, the platform is based on them. The current official website claims that users have published nearly 20 million games on the site.
